Maui Kahului (OGG): two buses every 90 minutes, and one bag only
Maui Bus routes 40 and 35 serve the airport every 90 minutes. Only one medium bag is allowed and it must fit under your seat, which rules the bus out for most arrivals.
- Two Maui Bus routes call at Kahului Airport: route 40, the Upcountry Islander, and route 35, the Haiku Islander.
- Both run every 90 minutes. Route 40 from 06:00 to 22:11, route 35 from 05:30 to 21:40.
- They run seven days a week including holidays.
- The luggage rule is the catch. One medium bag only, no larger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches, and it must fit under your seat or on your lap.
- A normal checked suitcase is not allowed on the bus. For most people arriving on Maui with holiday luggage, that settles it.
- No transfers are given on any route, so a journey with a change means paying twice.
- The stops are marked in front of the terminal.
- Most visitors hire a car, and on Maui that is the normal way to get around rather than a luxury.
The two routes
- Route 40, the Upcountry Islander, and route 35, the Haiku Islander, are the only Maui Bus routes that call at Kahului Airport.
- Both are every 90 minutes. Route 40 runs 06:00 to 22:11, route 35 runs 05:30 to 21:40, seven days a week including holidays.
- Stops are marked in front of the terminal and all vehicles are accessible.
Read the luggage rule before you plan around the bus
- One medium bag per passenger, no bigger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches, and it has to fit under your seat or on your lap without spilling into the next one.
- That is a carry-on, not a suitcase. If you have checked bags, the bus is not an option, and the airport says so itself.
- No transfers are given on any route. A trip that needs two buses needs two fares.
What people actually do
- Hire a car. Maui is spread out, the road to Hana and the Haleakala summit are the two things most visitors come for, and neither is reachable by bus.
- Take a shuttle or a taxi to the resort areas. Kihei, Wailea, Lahaina and Kaanapali are all served by pre-arranged ground transport from the terminal.
- The bus is genuinely useful if you live there or are travelling light, and it is cheap. It is not designed for arriving tourists with bags.
The airport
- Kahului is Maui's main airport, on the north shore of the island's central isthmus.
- Kapalua (JHM) and Hana (HNM) also exist but handle a handful of small aircraft.
- The agricultural inspection on departure is real: outbound bags are screened for plants and produce before check-in, so allow extra time leaving.
