Oakland (OAK): BART every six minutes, and the night bus that covers the gap
The BART station is opposite the terminals, eight minutes from Coliseum where the whole network connects. Line 805 covers the small hours.
- The BART station is just across the street from the terminals.
- Trains leave every 6 minutes for most of the day.
- The ride to Coliseum station takes 8 minutes, and Coliseum connects to every BART destination.
- From there BART reaches downtown San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and the rest of the Bay Area.
- Weekdays: 05:00 to 23:00 every 6 minutes, then every 20 minutes until midnight.
- Saturdays: from 06:00. Sundays: from 08:00. Same pattern after that.
- AC Transit line 73 connects the airport with Coliseum/OAK BART every 15 minutes from 04:56 to 00:06.
- Line 805 is the night bus, hourly between 00:35 and 04:30, to Coliseum/OAK BART and downtown Oakland.
- Amtrak's nearest station is Jack London Square in Oakland, served by the Capitols, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr.
A station across the street
- OAK's BART station is directly opposite the terminals, connected by the airport's own people mover, and it is one of the shortest airport-to-train walks in the United States.
- Trains leave every six minutes through most of the day, which is a metro frequency rather than an airport-shuttle one.
- The ride to Coliseum station is eight minutes. Coliseum is the interchange: from there BART goes everywhere it goes.
Hours
- Weekdays: 05:00 to 23:00, every 6 minutes; 23:00 to midnight, every 20 minutes.
- Saturdays: 06:00 to 23:00 every 6 minutes; then every 20 minutes to midnight.
- Sundays: 08:00 to 23:00 every 6 minutes; then every 20 minutes to midnight.
- Nothing after midnight. That is where the buses come in.
The buses
- AC Transit line 73 runs between the airport and Coliseum/OAK BART every 15 minutes from 04:56 to 00:06 - a cheaper parallel to the airport connector.
- Line 805 is the late-night service, connecting the airport with Coliseum/OAK BART and downtown Oakland hourly between 00:35 and 04:30. That is the answer to a red-eye arrival.
- Line 21 runs between Oakland Fruitvale and Alameda.
Trains
- Amtrak's nearest station is Oakland Jack London Square. The Capitol Corridor runs San Jose to Sacramento twelve times a day on weekdays; the Coast Starlight runs Los Angeles to Seattle daily; the California Zephyr runs Oakland to Chicago by way of Reno, daily.
The airport with three names
- It was renamed Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport, which caused a legal fight with San Francisco, and everyone still calls it Oakland.
- It is on the east side of the bay, about 16 km from downtown San Francisco as the crow flies and rather more by BART.
- SFO and San Jose are the other two Bay Area airports, and all three are worth checking - OAK is often the cheapest and the BART link makes it genuinely usable.
