Savannah (SAV): the 100X is five dollars, and it stops at six
CAT Route 100X runs non-stop from the airport to the transit centre beside the Historic District. It is cheap and it is infrequent, and it does not run in the evening.
- CAT Route 100X is the Airport Express, running daily between the airport and downtown.
- It goes non-stop to the Joe Murray Rivers, Jr Intermodal Transit Center, just west of the Historic District and close to the visitor centre and many hotels.
- The fare is USD 5.00 one way and USD 8.00 return. The ordinary CAT base fare is USD 1.50, so the airport route carries a premium.
- Roughly every 90 minutes, from about 08:00 to 18:00, and the journey takes about 35 minutes.
- Ninety minutes between buses and nothing after six is the catch. For an evening arrival it is not an option.
- The airport is about 10 to 12 miles from downtown Savannah, roughly 20 minutes by car.
- Uber and Lyft both operate.
- Palmetto Airport Shuttle serves Hilton Head, on 843-981-1111, and Coastal Regional Coaches runs regional services.
- Once downtown, the DOT Express Shuttle and the Savannah Belles Ferry are both free. That covers most of the Historic District and River Street.
- The name is not marketing. This is the airport for Hilton Head Island as well as Savannah, and the shuttle across the state line is a scheduled service.
The 100X
- Chatham Area Transit runs Route 100X as an Airport Express.
- Non-stop to the Joe Murray Rivers, Jr Intermodal Transit Center, which sits just west of the Historic District, near the visitor centre and a lot of the hotels.
- USD 5.00 one way, USD 8.00 return. CAT's ordinary base fare is USD 1.50, so this is a premium route rather than a normal city bus.
- About every 90 minutes, roughly 08:00 to 18:00, seven days a week.
- About 35 minutes.
- The limits are the frequency and the hours. A flight landing at 19:30 has no bus, and a ninety minute gap is a long wait with luggage.
Everything else
- Uber and Lyft both operate at the airport.
- A taxi or rideshare downtown is about 20 minutes.
- Palmetto Airport Shuttle, on 843-981-1111, serves Hilton Head Island across the state line in South Carolina.
- Coastal Regional Coaches, on 866-543-6744, runs the wider regional network.
Two free things once you are downtown
- The DOT Express Shuttle is free and loops the Historic District.
- The Savannah Belles Ferry is free and crosses the river to Hutchinson Island.
- Between them they cover most of what a visitor needs, which makes the one-time USD 5.00 bus fare from the airport look better than it does in isolation.
The name
- Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport serves both, and Hilton Head is in a different state.
- Hilton Head has its own small airport, but SAV is the practical one for most visitors, which is why the scheduled shuttle exists.
