Dallas Love Field (DAL): route 5 to the train, then 11 minutes to downtown
DART route 5 connects the terminal to Inwood/Love Field Station in 7 to 8 minutes. From there the Green or Orange line reaches downtown in 11 minutes.
- There is no train at the terminal. Love Field is served by a shuttle bus, DART route 5, which runs to Inwood/Love Field Station.
- Route 5 takes 7 to 8 minutes from the baggage claim stop to the station.
- Route 5 runs 04:22 to 01:16 from the airport, which is a genuinely long day.
- At Inwood/Love Field Station take the Green Line or the Orange Line. Either reaches downtown Dallas (Akard, West End) in 11 minutes.
- The Green Line runs 03:37 to 01:56, the Orange Line 03:22 to 01:28, both from that station.
- Two other buses serve the station: route 103 to downtown Dallas (04:36 to 00:54) and route 207 to the CBD West Transfer Center (04:42 to 00:45).
- Total airport to downtown is about 20 minutes plus whatever you wait, which beats the drive in rush hour.
- Love Field is only 10 km from downtown, much closer in than DFW.
The two-step ride
- Love Field does not have a station of its own. What it has is a dedicated shuttle, DART route 5, from the stop at baggage claim to Inwood/Love Field Station on the light rail.
- The shuttle leg is 7 to 8 minutes in DART's own timetable data, and buses run from 04:22 until 01:16.
- At the station, two light rail lines stop: the Green Line and the Orange Line. Both take 11 minutes to reach the downtown stations at Akard and West End.
- So the whole trip is about 20 minutes of moving, plus waiting twice. Allow 35 to 45 minutes door to door and you will not be caught out.
The hours are unusually generous
- Green Line from Inwood/Love Field: 03:37 to 01:56.
- Orange Line from Inwood/Love Field: 03:22 to 01:28.
- Route 5 from the airport: 04:22 to 01:16.
- Between them these cover almost every flight Love Field handles, which is not true of most American airport transit.
Other buses at the station
- Route 103 runs to downtown Dallas, 04:36 to 00:54.
- Route 207 runs to the CBD West Transfer Center and out to Regal Row, 04:42 to 00:45.
- If the rail is disrupted, these are the fallback rather than a taxi.
The airport itself
- Love Field sits about 10 km north-west of downtown Dallas, which makes it far closer to the city than DFW.
- It is the Southwest Airlines home airport and mostly domestic, so arriving passengers are usually through the building fast.
- A federal rule known as the Wright Amendment used to cap where flights from here could go. It expired in 2014, which is why the route map suddenly widened.
